DIY Diaper Wipes

Standard

Diaper wipes aren’t a very sexy blog post and clearly if you don’t have babies then it certainly isn’t relevant.
If you gotta wipe a baby booty, though, well you need a wipe.
Before I had Amethyst, I had all these grand plans to not only use cloth diapers exclusively, but also to use reusable and washable wipes like cloth ( organic hemp, of course lol.) Cloth diapering is totally worth it to really make an effort and try to make it work, at least in my experience with my family.
But the cloth wipes… For me, it just hasn’t worked out. The first time you have a blowout poop to deal with along with a crying baby and the knowledge that at some point you will have to deal with the poopy diaper, the idea of using a cloth wipe is unbearable! It’s like please give me something I can just use and throw away! Fuck it, I will be a bad environmentalist if it means touching even a little less poop throughout the day.

What I can’t do though, is wipe my littles’ precious boot with normal baby wipes. Even in the so-called natural ones there is still a bunch of ingredients I can’t pronounce but I know that at the very least I don’t want triclosan, parabens, sodium laureth/ laurel sulfates, and a bunch of iso-, butyl-, propyl-, hexl- what have you’s. This is where homemade wipes come in. Now, I know they aren’t perfect as it is still wasteful and using virgin forests, etc. But man, living in the world is hard sometimes.

First, get a plastic box with a lid. Something smallish and rectangular but big enough to fit a standard roll of paper towels.

Next, get a roll of paper towels. Awesome if you can find/ afford recycled ones. Place the roll into the box.
20130516-224446.jpg
Now gather your ingredients.
20130516-224458.jpg
You need some kind of mild soap. I use Dr. Bronners unscented baby soap because I use that soap for everything I need to wash for Amethyst.
You also need an oil (coconut oil is great because it is naturally anti-fungal but you can use whatever good quality oil you have on hand like olive, grapeseed, sesame etc.) and some essential oils. I always use tea tree oil for antibacterial goodness and lavender oil because it is soothing and smells divine. Sometimes I will add in another oil like rose, peppermint or rosemary.
In a blender, put two cups of water, a generous squirt of soap, a tablespoon of oil and a few drops of each essential oil.
20130516-224507.jpg
Blend for a few seconds until it is foamy and then pour on top of the paper towel roll that you put in the box.
As it sits soaking up the liquid, you will be able to remove the cardboard tube in the middle.
20130516-224515.jpg
That is it!
If you need some for on the go, just take some from the roll and put them into a ziplock bag. I have one in my diaper bag that I refill as necessary. It works out so much cheaper for us to do this! So, even if you don’t have babies, pass this idea along to any mamas you know who might be interested.

unplanned break- and plans

Standard

Apparently I took a little unplanned break from ye olde blog.  I didn’t really mean to, things just got a little overwhelming over this way.  I don’t really  have any support network to speak of or coping mechanisms in place at this point in my life, so when things get overwhelming it quickly turns into not being able to deal with my life, much less blog about it.  Right now, I am still feeling down and not really knowing how to get out of it, but I am recognizing it for what it is.  I do have coping mechanisms.  I know that.  I didn’t do a course in Rebirthing or a course in Kundalini Yoga for nothing.  I have a tool-kit now to help me deal with negative thoughts and feelings.  The problem is that my pattern is being so consumed by that negativity that it does not even occur to me to use my tools.

Right now, it is one day at a time for me.  One breath at a time, one moment of reflection and being okay in the moment.  One at a time.  And that is okay.  For now.

I do have some things to share with all of you though.  I’ve got a recipe for some pretty damn awesome Apricot- Cardamom Cookie Squares and I’ve got a tutorial on how I make my own baby wipes for the wee one.  So please stick around.  There is Life here!

Avocado Jicama Dandelion Salad

Standard

For some reason, I haven’t been able to find any jicama locally. It isn’t a common sight in Spain so it has been a really long time since I have been able to enjoy it. This past weekend, I saw some at the supermarket in Lafayette and just had to buy one. I didn’t really know what to do with it but yesterday I was so hungry and wanted something filling but light and it had to be raw. I also remembered all the dandelion flowers I have been pickling this spring and wanted to use some of those.
I just sort of threw this together but it would be a wonderful substitute for guacamole for any kind of Mexican meal. Lower in fat, higher in fiber, and certainly cheaper! A win-win situation!

Jicama Avocado Dandelion Salad

1 small or half large jicama
1 avocado
2 tbsp pickled dandelion flowers
1 tsp aji amarillo powder or other mild chili powder
Pinch kalahari salt or sea salt

Finely dice or shred jicama and place into a bowl. Then add all other ingredients and mix thoroughly until avocado is mashed into everything. Serve immediately.

What I’m Loving Wednesday

Standard

Here we are again!   And I did it this week :)

This week is especially beneficial for me to focus on the good right now.  As I said last week, we are dealing with some health issues in the household right now which has been crazy making and then yesterday I woke up with some really bad back pain.  It is really the only time my back has ever hurt, barring some soreness while I was pregnant.  Anyway, it can be easy to dwell and feel sorry for myself!  So, the good!

1. The carrot cake smoothie posted in Facebook this morning by The Raw Food World.  It was incredibly delicious and when I make it again I will double or triple the recipe if it is to be shared with anyone else.  Haha, THAT good!

Carrot Cake Smoothie

I large carrot

1 cup almond milk

1 frozen banana

1 tbsp chia seeds

1 tbsp vanilla brown rice protein (like Sunwarrior, which is my fave!)

2 tsp vanilla powder or 1 tsp extract

pinch cinnamon

1 tbsp coconut oil (optional as it was not in the original recipe but hubby asked me to add some)

Add almond milk first then other ingredients into Vita-mix or other high powered blender and blend until creamy and smooth.

Serves 1 (or 2 small servings)

2. The garden!  My mother has always been proud of her yard, so this year we are just putting some things in pots as it would have been traumatic to my mom for us to rip our something for a veggie patch!  Starting out so small, but I love the things we have so far:

Here is some lavender, a stevia plant, a peppermint, a Malabar spinach plant and a poblano pepper:

lavender, stevia, peppermint, Malabar spinach, poblano pepper

Here is some more of the Malabar spinach.  It is meant to be a heat-loving perennial edible green which tastes a bit like spinach although it is extremely distantly related.
Malabar spinach

This is another poblano, a hibiscus my mother had previously and a mulberry sapling we got for free!
poblano, hibiscus and mulberry sapling

Here we have a loquat sapling, parsley and some pineapple sage that smells heavenly next to two strawberry plants and a jalapeño.

In addition to the things that we planted, we also have a satsuma tree here, a pear tree and a whole load of blackberry (or dewberry) bushes around the property.  I picked a good handful of them today.  They were tart but tasty!

This post is getting long, so I will leave it at that.  Short list, but sweet :)   Have a wonderful rest of the week, y’all!

Home feels so nice!

Standard

We had a great time at Festival International de Louisiane. Amethyst’s first festival experience was a success! We listened to Iranian trance music complete with Sufi dancers, saw old friends we needed to reconnect with, laughed and ate (none of which was raw or even vegan-shock horror!! Oh wait- really late one night I stopped at the grocery store and got a kombucha and some frozen raw lemon pie hehe)

Anyway, after the excesses of this weekend, it became so glaringly obvious just how physically unfit I have become since giving birth. Well, and scales don’t lie either. So instead of falling into a black hole of despair and apathy as per usual, tomorrow I am going to start a smoothie cleanse again to lighten things up and hopefully gain some energy and clarity. So I will be posting about that this week. Also, tomorrow I need to get my butt in the kitchen to create some alchemical delights that I look forward to sharing here as well.

Here’s to an amazing week ahead y’all!

Thankful Thursday

Standard

I really just cannot get it together for Wednesday posts, can I?  The saving grace is that there is always another opportunity to do it over and that there is no time like the present to do so.  So here we go, Thankful Thursday today.  And I am grateful for so many things!  This week has been especially hard due to some family health issues that are really quite serious and sad but I am really trying to focus on the wonderful aspects of my life and not dwell on the negatives.

1. Time with my family and daughter.  I have been so, so blessed to be in a situation where I have been able to care for Amethyst at home with her daddy.  We have made some sacrifices for sure and have no income to speak of at the moment but Amethyst gets to be with not only us but her grandparents for the first part of her life.  Our life and financial situation won’t look like this forever, but we are really trying to enjoy every moment we spend with her and together.
happy family, happy tummies
2. I got accepted to vend at the Shreveport Farmers Market this year!  That means that this summer I will be able to share my food with people other than my immediate family and friends and I am happy to no end!  Regardless of it makes money, I am really looking forward to the experience of learning and meeting some new people.  So stoked!!!

3. My Vita-mix.  Man, after years of using crap blenders (and some not so crap ones) and burning out motors, breaking jugs and whatever else can possibly go wrong, I have to say that my vita-mix has never, ever let me down.  Even when I use it for non-optimal uses.  Like making raw brownies for which I really need a new food processor.  I use the vita-mix probably 5 times per day on average.  Love it hard <3  and am thankful that I was able to make that purchase.

4. Kombucha.  Especially locally brewed kombucha.  In Spain, I was a fermented beverage queen.  Kombucha, water kefir, ginger bug- I did it all and was pretty good at it  ;)   Since moving to Shreveport, I haven’t had the time to take on yet another project like that yet.  I still love getting my gut loving probiotics in sparkly beverage form though, so when I have a chance to lay my paws on some local booch, I always do.  Like this one I got in Austin that I loved so much and is truly my favorite kombucha EVAR!!

Mmmmm, prickly pear. This one was so awesome I had it again!

Louisiana needs a kombucha maker.  Maybe a new career is in store for me, LOL!

5. Old friends!  We are leaving tomorrow for Lafayette to spend time with friends of ours and to hit up Festtival International de Louisiane.  It is our first time going in such a long time (since I was in college which was, um over 10 years ago *gulp*)   The thing about old friends that I love is that even though both of you have changed so much since you met, you just accept each other and keep on loving through it all.  At least that is how it should be.  With my best friend Rene, although we don’t have much surface stuff in common, we do share a mutual love and respect for each other that keeps us wanting to spend time together.  Oh, and we laugh!  I can’t wait to see her and wish we lived closer!

Review: Be Raw Food and Juice

Standard

In a previous post, I mentioned that my hubby had to be in Dallas.  After his appointment, we went to the raw food restaurant in Dallas, Be Raw Food and Juice.  As far as I know, there are other places to get raw vegan food, juice bars, Whole Foods, etc. but this is the only dedicated raw food restaurant at the moment.  When I heard that Bliss Café shut down without my ever getting a chance to try it out, I was pretty upset having just moved back to Shreveport.  So of course I was just so happy to hear of another raw foods place.  I called to make sure they were going to be open and the woman who answered the phone was very friendly and professional.  I really don’t know much at all about the layout of Dallas, but I do know that driving is notoriously stressful there.  However, finding the restaurant was not really a problem at all.  I can’t really tell you where it is, but google maps works ;)
Be Raw in Dallas
Dan and I kind of went crazy when we got there.  We each ordered a soup.  I got the corn chowder.
corn chowder
This was phenomenal.  Creamy, chunky, peppery corn goodness.  The menu said it contained coconut water and hemp seeds so if the base is made from that, then it is much more nutrient dense than a traditional raw corn chowder made with cashews.

And he got the pho.
raw vegan pho
Really, really good.  Slightly spicy, gingery and with a flavor that neither Dan nor I could put our finger on.  I love it when that happens!  I am normally really good at dissecting raw recipes and it is awesome when someone can keep you guessing!

Then he ordered the trio of pizzas
trio of pizzas
The pizzas were alright.  I liked the variety- Greek, Margherita and another one with pineapple on it.  Also the portion size was amazing for the price.  The base was really soggy though, and some of the flavors were a little bland.  I hate that I didn’t like this dish much, but maybe it was just an off day?  Or that I just reeeally like my own raw pizzas?? LOL

And I ordered the coconut kale enchiladas
coconut kale enchiladas
These babies were the BOMB!  I liked them way better than the enchiladas at Daily Juice in Austin and I thought those were great.  The enchilada wrapper just melted in your mouth, the kale was massaged with avocado and spiced to perfection and the sauces were just perfect.  Green and red salsa on the side as well!  Just about the best thing ever!!

We also ordered a brownie, the amigo wrap and a pad thai to go, not knowing what our eating situation was going to be like in Fort Worth.

The brownie was super delicious but did not want to be photographed after a long car ride.  It was expensive, but big and I liked the fact that they covered it in a fresh berry sauce.

amigo wrap
The amigo wrap was like a raw mexican burrito inside of a lettuce leaf.  We ate this as a late night snack after a dip in the pool and a soak in the hot tub at the Omni where we were staying.  This was incredibly delicious as well.  The staff at Be Raw really know how to bring in the Tex Mex flavors that the area is known for into raw food.

Last was the pad thai, which to be fair we had the next day.  I thought this was alright, but paled in comparison to the other dishes we had.  The variety of spiralized veggies was colorful and tasty, but the sauces were lacking something and there wasn’t enough of them to really coat the veggie noodles.  For my tastes, this could have done with some fresh herbs like cilantro or thai basil and the addition of more textures like crushed nuts or something.
raw pad thai

All in all, the food was stellar.  I know now what kinds of things that are more suited to my tastes and I cannot wait to try more!!

Baby Food

Standard

I posted a while back about my struggles breastfeeding and what we do in our family regarding milk.

I wanted to do a little update on what we do now about feeding our little one.

First, Amethyst still gets the vast majority of her calories through milk.  At this time that means she gets mostly her home-made formula although she can breastfeed on demand.  As she gets older and more interested in the world around her however, her interest in the boob has waned dramatically which means that my milk production has decreased as well.  As a family, we decided against long term intensive breast pumping to maintain my supply.

Starting at about 4 months, Amethyst starting being extremely curious about the food that we were eating.  We didn’t really offer her anything, but as the weeks went by and her interest kept growing we started offering her a few things.  She started with some pureed pears, and then some sweet potato, then apple and spirulina, then avocado and banana.  She loved everything she tasted and we began letting her taste some of our food (within reason, of course!)

Now, at almost 8 months old Amethyst LOVES green smoothies, green juices (even the ones with wild greens), coconut water, all kinds of fruit but especially berries and melons, yogurt, broccoli, carrots-anything really.

Image

drinking her green juice in a big girl cup!

Ideally, I would have waited a bit longer before introducing nuts and seeds into her diet but she stole a sip of a smoothie I was having that had hemp seeds and cashews.  We don’t specifically give her these, but after seeing that she suffered no ill effects we let her taste things with those two ingredients in.

Once, when we were having a quinoa pasta dish, I mushed up a few pieces of the quinoa pasta and let her have those.  I’ve also mushed up a few black beans when we were having black bean tacos for her to try along with her beloved avocado.  We have also just started feeding her egg yolk a few times a week for choline, which is necessary for brain development.

So that is where we are now- in the food for fun stage!  We like to let her try out her palate and taste all kinds of new things without pressuring her to eat any more than she likes.  She will easily suck down half a glass of green smoothie, though!!

My girl getting her Vitamin D!

So, we may be doing it all wrong.  But we are doing it intuitively and following Amethyst’s lead.  She is a thriving, happy and well adjusted girl who is always eager to learn new things.

Coffee and Doughnut Remix

Standard

This last week has been pretty crazy.  We had to go to Dallas for my hubby to have a biometric scan as part of his immigration process and it just so happened that my Dad was going to be in Fort Worth for an industry convention that week.  So we stayed over and did the DFW thing for a few days.  It was kind of awesome, actually.  But also tiring and I have been laying low since we got back, especially considering that next weekend we are going away again.  This time down south to Lafayette for Festival International, which we are looking forward to not only for the music but for reconnecting with old friends!

So for today, I want to post about a few of my recent discoveries which came together quite serendipitously as classic police fare, haha.  The famed coffee and doughnuts, but this way the doughnuts aren’t deep fried balls of flour and sugar and the coffee isn’t the normal brewed crap with cream and white sugar.

For the dougnuts, I used a recipe from the absolutely amazing blog fragrant vanilla cake.  I have been eyeing and drooling over her creations over there for months now and chose this lemon lavender dougnut recipe as my first recipe to try of hers.

here they are dehydrating in all their glory:
lemon lavender raw doughnuts dehydrating

I loved these doughnuts.  I thought that the texture was incredible and the light lemony and lavender flavor came through without being overpowering.  That being said, next time I make these (and there will be a next time) I will leave off the frosting and dip them in chocolate instead.  I think that as a base recipe for doughnuts, this recipe is a real winner!

And cold brew!  This is probably one of the most revolutionary discoveries I have made in a while.  We bought a bottle at Central Market in Fort Worth for the trip home and enjoyed it so much that I was determined to find out how to make it.  Well, as it turns out it is just about the easiest thing to make. ever.
cold brewed iced coffee
1. Take the best quality coffee you can afford, although even crap coffee is going to taste infinitely better cold brewed and grind it (or buy it pre-ground..whatever works for your lifestyle and budget)

2. Add 1 cup of your ground coffee to a big jar along with 4 cups of cold water

3. Stir the coffee and water and then cover it.

4. Let sit overnight up to 24 hours.

5. Strain the mixture really well. (I use a coffee filter inside of a funnel.  It takes about half an hour to fully pass through the filter)

6. Dilute this concentrate 1:1 with water, coconut water or nut milk of your choice.  Sweeten to your liking with stevia, honey, maple syrup etc.  I myself am partial to a home-made date sweetened almond milk with a touch of cinnamon :)

ATX in the Raw Part 3

Standard

Last up in the series is the Daily Juice.  They apparently have quite a few locations but we went to the one on Duval St.  Let me just say- I freaking love this place.  By far my favorite of the joints we tried out for raw foods in Austin.  We ended up there by accident one night.  My parents weren’t really into having raw food again that night and so we went to some food trucks (I had a dosa at Nomad Dosa, which was awesome by the way- pure vegan gluten-free goodness!).  There wasn’t anything at the food truck court for dessert, especially not for me.  I said that I had heard about the existence of a vegan ice-cream parlor and my Dad thought we should go…so I looked it up on my iphone and off we went.  Well, the ice cream place was inside of Daily Juice and I insisted we come back the next day to try out their raw food.  And we did!

So…Daily Juice.  First off, the vibe in the place is just really cool.  It is not austere in any way, very colorful and they play good music (I don’t remember exactly what was playing when we were there but it ran the gamut from drum n bass, reggae, dub, indie, trip-hop, etc.)  The only photo I have of the interior is this one with my two loves.
Untitled
I had a green smoothie, as did my hubby but we both had different ones.  They have an extensive and amazing smoothie menu.  Even my Dad had some kind of goji berry based smoothie.  My Mom went for a Kombucha.

Our duo of green smoothie love going on:
Untitled
Then we all had raw kale enchiladas.  Well, except for my mother who had to be a rebel and ordered a vegan frito pie.  Man, these enchiladas were uhmayzing.  We all enjoyed them!
Untitled
Of course, we had to hit up the chocolate case as well before we left!  Dan was sooo excited when he saw that they had durian chocolate in there!
Untitled
Sorry for the craptastic photo, but we can’t all be perfect ;)   I tried so hard to like it, but as it turns out, I just can’t do durian.  This was my fourth try with durian, the other three being fresh stuff and I thought ok, surely with chocolate i’ll love it.  Well, no. No, I don’t.  And I want to, I really do.  So, it pains me deeply to admit it but I FUCKING HATE DURIAN FRUIT!!!

But that’s ok cuz I got some amazing chocolates anyway and Dan went back and bought out the rest of the durian choccies so everybody was happy in the end.

The rest of our day involved hiking over this:

and swimming in this:

and then a beautiful drive to Luckenbach where we were blessed by an impromptu concert and a tribe of chickens.
